Aloha Kapaa High Foundation,
My first semester at Pacific University was full of meeting new people, new experiences and a handful of new hurdles to leap over. Currently, I am one of three freshman representatives for Na Hauman O Hawaii, our school’s Hawaii club, which keeps me busy. Spring is slowly creeping around the corner, and the weather and scenery is starting to creep out of the winter cold. With the support of the Kapaa High Foundation, I have been given the key to a great education. My goal to become a teacher is one step closer. Thank you so much for helping Kapaa seniors get off to a great start!
Sincerely,
Angela Mones

This year, the Kapaa High School Foundation awarded student grants of $1,000 each to Dustin Valdez, Angela Mones and Mark Bonilla. The grants will help these students in their pursuit of a higher education. Dustin Valdez will be pursuing a career in Environmental Science, an important and highly relevant field. Angela Mones has a goal of becoming an educator, a career choice that runs in her family. Mark Bonilla is set on becoming a health care professional. We look forward to hearing of their future successes. Each student selected for this grant has shown excellence in contributing to community service projects and extracurricular activities.

The Foundation’s donation to Project Graduation 2009 helped to provide the buses used to shuttle graduating students to their group celebration. The buses, which were provided free of charge in previous years, came at cost in 2009. Without help from the Foundation, the unanticipated expense would have strained the program’s budget and resources, and potentially derailed an event designed to keep kids off the roads, and promote a safe, drug-and-alcohol-free night of celebration.

The 2008 Outstanding Educator Award was presented to math teacher Erin Millard for her extraordinary efforts in teaching, motivating and inspiring her students to learn. Mrs. Millard, a Kapa`a High School graduate herself (class of 2000), was nominated by student Kula Brede in an essay contest that went on to earn Kula a $200 prize. Kula, who was a student in Mrs. Millard’s class, described Mrs. Millard as a “friend, a shoulder to lean on, a role model and most of all a giver.” For her excellence in teaching, Mrs. Millard was awarded $1,000.
Congratulations Mrs. Millard and thank you for helping to shape and prepare our youth for the challenges of tomorrow.
