This year the Foundation awarded three Kapaa High School Seniors with grants of $500.00 each. The winners were Alia Weiss, Abigal Iloreta, and Kiah Shigeta-Koizumi.
Alia Weiss will be attending the University of Hawaii in the fall seeking a degree in Nursing. A straight A student, she was active in the National Honor Society, Key Club, and Interact Club. She also lettered in Track and Field, Cross Country, and Swimming. With her amazing time management skills she also held a part time job for most of her middle school and high school years.
Abigal Iloreta will be attending UCLA in the fall with the ultimate goal of having a career in medicine. Besides being a straight A student, Abigal was co-captain of the Kapaa High School Cheerleading squad and held leadership roles in a long list of volunteer organizations which includes the Key Club, Interact Club, and National Honor Society. Abigal was also the Senior Class President.
Kiah Shigeta-Koizumi will be attending Oregon State University pursuing a degree in Clinical Psychology. Her goal is to be able to help people, especially women, deal with traumatic life experiences. Kiah is an Honor Student with a passion for helping others. She enjoyed volunteering as an assistant coach for AYSO(youth soccer), Big Brother/Big Sister program, Interact Club and National Honor Society.
These young women are truly amazing. They display maturity beyond their years in the way they manage their time in achieving so much of their academic, athletic, and other personal goals, sometimes overcoming difficult circumstances to do so. We all hope that they can hold on tight to their dreams.
The Foundation would like to thank all the donors who make these grants possible. Your generosity will go a long way in encouraging the young men and women who are coming out of Kapaa High School to be the best that they can be.

Aloha Kapaa High Foundation,
My first semester at Pacific University was full of meeting new people, new experiences and a handful of new hurdles to leap over. Currently, I am one of three freshman representatives for Na Hauman O Hawaii, our school’s Hawaii club, which keeps me busy. Spring is slowly creeping around the corner, and the weather and scenery is starting to creep out of the winter cold. With the support of the Kapaa High Foundation, I have been given the key to a great education. My goal to become a teacher is one step closer. Thank you so much for helping Kapaa seniors get off to a great start!
Sincerely,
Angela Mones

The Foundation’s donation to Project Graduation 2009 helped to provide the buses used to shuttle graduating students to their group celebration. The buses, which were provided free of charge in previous years, came at cost in 2009. Without help from the Foundation, the unanticipated expense would have strained the program’s budget and resources, and potentially derailed an event designed to keep kids off the roads, and promote a safe, drug-and-alcohol-free night of celebration.

Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Class of 1979
As I reflect back to my High School days, I remember how school was very important to me because I knew that it was a safe place that offered me the chance to learn and to develop friendships. I was very involved in school activities such as: member of the Future Farmers of America, Hawaiian Club, Class Officer and member of the Hawaii School Choir where I served as Vice President. I was also very active in sports where I was captain of the Football and Basketball teams. My most impactful school accomplishment was being elected Student Body President in 1979. This was a great time for me where we campaigned with classmates and underclassmen for various school projects and programs. The prime accomplishment during that time was the installation of a pay phone on campus.
