Evan Costa Receives “Clara Kaneshiro Outstanding Educator Award”

Evan Costa was selected by Principal Gilmore Youn to receive the Clara Kaneshiro Outstanding Educator  Award for the school year 2009-2010.  This award which comes with  check for $250.00 is given to a teacher who does does his or her job in an extraordinary way to have a positive impact on the students.

Mr. Costa, the woodshop teacher,  has been the CTE chairperson for the past 6 years.  According to Mr. Youn, Mr. Costa has incorporated English and Math strategies within the CTE curriculum.  He encouraged implementing the “Project Based Method” which allows the students to learn core skills while acquiring ‘hands on” experience in the process.  He has also molded the CTE department into a highly functional and cohesive unit, and empowered the department members to work closely with the administration in initiating school wide instructional strategies.

This award is giving in memory of Clara Kaneshiro,   a very positive and energetic member of the Kapaa High Foundation Board who passed away recently.

2008 Outstanding Educator Award

The 2008 Outstanding Educator Award was presented to math teacher Erin Millard for her extraordinary efforts in teaching, motivating and inspiring her students to learn. Mrs. Millard, a Kapa`a High School graduate herself (class of 2000), was nominated by student Kula Brede in an essay contest that went on to earn Kula a $200 prize. Kula, who was a student in Mrs. Millard’s class, described Mrs. Millard as a “friend, a shoulder to lean on, a role model and most of all a giver.” For her excellence in teaching, Mrs. Millard was awarded $1,000.

Congratulations Mrs. Millard and thank you for helping to shape and prepare our youth for the challenges of tomorrow.
